  1. The book How to Read literature Like A Professor for Kids by Thomas C. Foster was a very enjoyable read that provides students with an insightful way to analyze literature. I came across this book after searching for the original edition, but was very pleased to come across this smaller companion which I came to learn addresses the same topics as the actual one, but relates it to books and movies more familiar to high school students. The book covers a variety of topics, including quests, symbols, sonnets and seasons, all of which play a prominent role in the deeper understanding of literature that are often overlooked by students. While many of these topics are stressed by teachers, this book provides a greater explanation as to how to recognize these elements, and is essentially a guide book for how a particular event, such as weather and time, could contribute to the meaning of the novel. While the book is recommended for kids, I feel it is directed largely toward high school students, due to the novels referenced, which are not read until sophomore or junior year. I particularly liked how at the end of the book the author provides a story so the reader can apply what they have learned to an actual piece of literature, and then see other students’ opinions. The author is also very reassuring throughout the book, and encourages you as the reader to feel confident with your own interpretation of a story, and requires the reader to think throughout the course of the novel without blatantly stating the answer, which I feel enhances the reader’s understanding. He also makes it quite evident that there is never one correct answer, but makes it clear where teachers such as himself gather their interpretation of a story. I was very pleased with this book, strongly recommend it to all high school students. I am currently looking forward to reading the original edition; How to Read Literature Like a Professor.
